His Divine Grace
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda

Oṁ Viṣṇupāda Paramahaṁsa Parivrājakācārya Aṣṭotara-śāta Śrī Śrīmad His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda made his divine advent in this world in 1896 in Kolkata, India, as Abhay Charan De, and from his very birth, his life was destined for divine purpose. He is not an ordinary person of this world, nor can his activities be measured by mundane standards. Rather, he is an empowered pure devotee (śaktyāveśa-avatāra), sent by Śrī Kṛṣṇa and His eternal associates to fulfill the desire of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu—that the holy name of the Lord be spread in every town and village of the world.

In 1922, when he met his eternal spiritual master, Oṁ Viṣṇupāda Paramahaṁsa Parivrājakācārya Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, the course of his life was set. Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta ordered him to preach Kṛṣṇa consciousness in the English language to the Western world. Śrīla Prabhupāda took this order as his life and soul.

Despite appearing to be elderly, with no financial resources, no institutional support, and no followers, Śrīla Prabhupāda fearlessly boarded the cargo ship Jaladuta in 1965 and set out for the United States. To the mundane eye, it may appear that he faced great hardships—seasickness, heart attacks, loneliness, and poverty—but such material difficulties could never affect one who is situated on the transcendental platform. Śrīla Prabhupāda is not an ordinary man; he is a mahā-bhāgavata, a nitya-siddha devotee sent directly by the Lord. His apparent struggles were simply part of the divine līlā orchestrated by Kṛṣṇa to show us the glory of His devotee. He came alone, yet he carried with him the order of his Guru Mahārāja, the power of the paramparā, and the infinite mercy of Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa. His journey was not a journey of chance—it was a divine mission destined to change the course of human history.

Accomplishments Beyond Imagination

Within a mere 11 years—from 1965 to 1977—Śrīla Prabhupāda achieved what no other spiritual leader in history has done:

  • Established the International Society for Kṛṣṇa Consciousness (ISKCON), now a global movement with centers in nearly every country.

  • Translated and published over 80 volumes of transcendental literature, including Bhagavad-gītā As It Is, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and Caitanya-caritāmṛta, each accompanied by his Bhaktivedānta purports which are not mere commentaries, but authoritative spiritual revelations.

  • Opened 108 temples, including grand projects like Śrī Māyāpur Candrodaya Mandir, the Kṛṣṇa-Balarāma Mandir in Vṛndāvana, and Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Londonīśvara Mandir in the UK.

  • Instituted the worship of the Deities of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa and Gaura-Nitāi all over the world, establishing the proper standards of Deity worship, sādhana, and Vaiṣṇava etiquette.

  • Delivered thousands of lectures, conversations, letters, and instructions, all preserved and studied by devotees till this day as the living law books for human society.

  • Initiated over five thousand disciples, transforming hippies into sādhus and building a brahminical society amidst the darkness of Kali-yuga.

Who but a mahā-bhāgavata could transform fallen souls of the West into strict followers of the four regulative principles and chant 16 rounds of the mahā-mantra daily? Who but a transparent via medium of the Supreme Lord could speak with such authority that even religionist, scholars, scientists, and atheists had to listen?

But perhaps his greatest accomplishment is that even after his disappearance in 1977—his entrance into mahā-samādhi—he continues to guide sincere souls through his books, lectures, instructions and representatives. As he himself said The potency of transcendental sound is never minimized because the vibrator is apparently absent. The instruction given in my books is supposed to be personal instruction. When we read the Bhagavad-gita As It Is, it is understood that we are receiving personal instructions of Krsna. No physical barrier is there in the case of spiritual affairs. Those who read his books with faith and sincerity feel his presence, hear his voice, and receive his guidance just as directly as if he were sitting before them. This is not imagination—it is the spiritual potency of the empowered ācārya. He is not gone. He is present eternally, through his vāṇī (instructions), continuing to uplift fallen souls and connect them to the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa.

Śrīla Prabhupāda’s legacy is not in a tomb or in history—it is alive, vibrant, and eternally relevant. His accomplishments are not concluded—they are ongoing, because he is not a figure of the past, but our spiritual master birth after birth; janme janme prabhu sei.

His Divine Personality

Śrīla Prabhupāda was not merely a scholar or teacher. He was a mahātmā, a great soul, fully surrendered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He was grave, yet merciful. Detached from everything material, yet personally involved in every detail of the mission of Lord Caitanya. His speech was precise, authoritative, and free from speculation. He never spoke a word that was not backed by guru, sādhu, and śāstra.

He did not flatter his audience with pseudo-spiritual platitudes. He fearlessly condemned atheism, impersonalism, and sense gratification, always speaking the truth for the benefit of all living beings. And yet, his compassion knew no bounds—he tirelessly gave of himself, day and night, so that conditioned souls might attain the highest goal of life: Kṛṣṇa-prema.

His Books: The Law Books for Humanity

Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books are not ordinary writings. They are the essence of all Vedic knowledge, made accessible for this fallen age. In his own words, I will never die. I shall live for my books, and you will utilize.  And indeed, even today, millions are coming to Kṛṣṇa consciousness simply by reading his books, which are imbued with transcendental potency. They are non-different from the ācārya himself. Each purport is a window into the spiritual world, and each verse explained is a light that dispels the dense darkness of ignorance.

The Eternal Initiating Guru: The System of Ṛtvik

Before his physical departure in 1977, Śrīla Prabhupāda gave clear instructions that the process of initiation should continue via ṛtvik representatives, who would initiate on his behalf. In his July 9th, 1977 directive, he authorized a formal system of ṛtvik initiations to ensure that he alone remains the initiating ācārya for the worldwide movement.

This is not a speculative concept—it is rooted in siddhānta. The spiritual master is eternal, and Śrīla Prabhupāda, as a mahā-bhāgavata uttama-adhikārī devotee, is capable of continuing to accept disciples even after his physical disappearance. The sincere disciple can take shelter of Śrīla Prabhupāda as dīkṣā-guru, through his books, his instructions, his audio, and the authorized system he himself put in place.

The idea that one needs a physically present guru is a misunderstanding. As Prabhupāda said, Thank you. That is the real presence. Physical presence is not important. So we should associate by the vibration, and not by the physical presence. That is real association. Śabdād anavṛtti. By sound.” Thus, he remains fully present through his vāṇī, and continues to guide, initiate, and uplift those who take full shelter of him.

Avoiding Offenders and Staying on the Pure Path

In order to advance steadily in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one must avoid the association of those who have usurped Śrīla Prabhupāda’s position, falsely presenting themselves as dīkṣā-gurus and disciples of these in his institution. These individuals, though once his students, have become guru-aparādhīs, offenders to the lotus feet of the ācārya, by claiming what was never given to them. And the same applies to their followers, disciples, and supporters—those who knowingly accept or promote such unauthorized gurus become equally implicated in the offense. To align oneself with those who reject or replace the spiritual master is to share in their deviation. Guru-avajña, the offense of minimizing or disobeying the bonafide spiritual master, is fatal to spiritual progress. Therefore, one must be extremely cautious not to lend one’s faith, time, or association to those who have deviated from Śrīla Prabhupāda’s orders and have taken his position for themselves.

Even more dangerous than physical association is hearing from such persons. Śrīla Prabhupāda and the previous ācāryas have repeatedly warned that hearing from a non-devotee or an offender is like drinking milk touched by the lips of a serpent—it appears nourishing, but it is poisoned. Their words are no longer purifying, but contaminating. Whatever scriptural references or external appearances they may offer, because their hearts are polluted by the desire to usurp the guru’s seat, their speech carries that contamination. To hear from them is to accept their poison into the heart, and thus one’s devotion becomes spoiled, faith is destroyed, and spiritual life becomes dry, mechanical, or completely lost.

Therefore, for one who desires true advancement in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, it is essential to avoid not only the bogus gurus but also their lectures, books, teachings, and institutions. The real spiritual benefit comes from hearing from pure devotees—those who are faithful to Śrīla Prabhupāda, who have not deviated in ambition, and who do not compromise his instructions.

Śrīla Prabhupāda warned repeatedly: “Do not manufacture anything.” “Do not try to change anything.” Those who reject his ṛtvik instruction, those who alter his books, distort his teachings, or displace him from the center of the Hare Krishna Movement—they are dangerous to spiritual life.

This warning also extends to the Gaudīya Maṭha and all its branches. Though externally they bear the name of Mahāprabhu, they are in fact in opposition to His mission, having rejected the instructions of Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, just as ISKCON’s bogus gurus have rejected the instructions of Śrīla Prabhupāda. Śrīla Prabhupāda himself testified that his godbrothers did not follow the order of their guru to form a GBC and preach unitedly. Instead, they fractured the mission, disobeyed his authority, and prematurely declared themselves ācāryas. The same mentality is now seen in ISKCON’s imposters. Therefore, those in the Gaudīya Maṭha and their descendants are of the same feather as the ISKCON usurpers and must also be avoided completely.

Conclusion: The World Has Never Seen Such a Spiritual Master

In this age of hypocrisy and quarrel, where true saintliness is exceedingly rare, Śrīla Prabhupāda stands like a divine lighthouse, shining through the darkness of Kali-yuga and showing the path back to Godhead. He is not just one among many; he is the greatest ācārya of all times, specially empowered by Śrī Kṛṣṇa to accomplish what no one else had done—to spread pure devotional service (śuddha-bhakti) across the entire universe.

Through his unmatched mercy, millions now chant the holy names of Kṛṣṇa, worship the Supreme Lord, and follow the four regulative principles of devotional life. But his gift goes far beyond just engaging people in regulated sādhana. Śrīla Prabhupāda gives the living entity the opportunity to attain the highest platform of devotional life—uttama-bhakti, the stage of pure love of God, which is rarely achieved even by great yogīs and jñānīs after lifetimes of endeavor.

He did not merely offer the ABCs of spiritual life as some envious claim. Rather, he transmits the full current of Rūpānuga-bhakti, exactly as given by Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī, Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, and ultimately Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. His teachings and books are not limited to vaidhi-bhakti, but they gradually uplift the sincere soul to rāgātmikā-bhaktispontaneous love.

This is evidenced clearly in the life of his exalted disciple Jayānanda Prabhu, whom Śrīla Prabhupāda personally declared to be an uttama-bhakta, a pure devotee of the Lord. Jayānanda Prabhu did not study in Sanskrit, he did not sit in Gosvāmī-style bhajana in Vṛndāvana, yet by simply following Śrīla Prabhupāda’s instructions with firm faith, humility, and dedication, he attained the topmost stage of devotional life.

Śrīla Prabhupāda left nothing lacking. His books contain everything—from the beginning stages of devotional practice to the most intimate understandings of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes. To suggest otherwise is not only false, it is an offense to the ācārya who came to deliver the entire world. He is the complete ācārya—perfect in tattva, rasā, and bhakti—and one who faithfully follows him receives everything.

Let the whole world know: Śrīla Prabhupāda is the viśva-guru, the spiritual master of the entire universe. Taking shelter of him is not a sentiment—it is the highest act of intelligence. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the deliverer of the fallen, the savior of mankind.

“HE LIVES FOREVER BY HIS DIVINE INSTRUCTIONS, AND THE FOLLOWER LIVES WITH HIM.”
